RIHS first timer: “He is a beautiful pony inside and out”

A pony who has been part of the family even longer than this current rider, 12 year old Moonstone Dance Fever and 11 year old Ruby Hobson made their Royal International Horse Show debut in the 122cm show hunter pony final.

‘Danson’ was bred by Ruby’s aunt, and has remained in the family ever since, competing locally in working hunter classes with older sister Tigerlily before being passed down to Ruby who was a little less keen on the jumping. This saw a redirection to flat showing and show hunter pony classes for the section B who carries Morwyn lines, sired by Morwyn Bronze Ensign.

“We travelled six and half hours up to the BSPS Scotland Spring Show at the beginning of the season, on my husband Andrew’s 50th birthday, in some particularly wintery weather. The first 122cm SHP class we competed in, Danson came first – we were over the moon for him we all cried!”

This was only the start of the long journeys for the Lancashire based family and the RIHS offered the family an eight hour road trip, but Ruby didn’t let the long drive dull her excitement, with her sights firmly set on galloping up the competitor-favourite Equitrek Ring hill – and their performance there did not disappoint.

“It was an absolute honour to compete there amongst the best ponies in the country – and to be placed fifth was a dream. It was the best day ever!” said an elated Ruby.

Mum, Sadie Hobson, finished: “We are now trying our luck with a couple of HOYS qualifiers, as this is all Ruby has ever wanted to do, especially with Danson, who is totally home produced and always worked by Ruby. Danson is just another member of our family and he lives a royal life in and out of his ‘castle’ whenever he chooses and completely runs our farm. He is a beautiful pony inside and out.

“He is truly a pony of a lifetime for both my daughters and has taught them everything they know.”
